COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Changes to Columbia bulk item trash collection go into effect on Monday, according to a release from the city.

Columbia councilmen signed off an amendment in September, which approved the bulk item changes and gave city sanitation workers a $5 raise.

Columbia Solid Waste Manager Steve Hunt said in the announcement bulky items will no longer be picked up on a customer's scheduled collection day.

The release said customers will have to request pick up for large items and appliances at least one week in advance.

Solid waste customers will receive one free bulk collection every year but they will be charged for additional collections.

"Additional requests for bulky item pickup will be charged at a rate of $21.50 for the first item and $5 for each additional item collected at the same time," Hunt said in the release.

The release added appliances that have refrigerant will cost $29 to be picked up.

All curbside trash must now be placed in trash bags and starting next year only city-branded bags will be picked up, according to the announcement.
