Columbia City Council looking to keep Go COMO transit free for riders
COLUMBIA Mo. (KMIZ)
The Columbia City Council is set to look at keeping Go COMO transit free for riders during its meeting on Tuesday.
Dr. Betsy Peters, the Ward 6 Columbia City Council member, said she thinks its a good idea since many city residents are still using the services during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"I think it's important for all of us to get to our jobs," Peters said. "So, if there's any way we can help people get to their jobs I think it's important to do so."
The city made it free to ride the bus earlier this year and on Tuesday, council could possibly make it free through Sept. 30, 2021.
Also on the agenda is a planned discussion regarding a ratification of the current health order, the FY 2021 city budget and the possible return of Bird Scooters.
Peters says she thinks the city will have to continue it's strict guidelines.
"Well, I certainly think we'll continue about the mask ordinance, and the bar closings," Peters said. "We're trying to keep as much of the city open as possible and still not have too many new cases."
As for the city budget, Peters says it will be a leaner year for the city in terms of spending but she thinks the City Manager, John Glascock has done well to adjust to the public recommendations.
"He's cut I think 170 positions," Peters said. "I believe he's, adding five positions to the Columbia Police Department but they're trying to do that as social workers and caseworkers."
The Columbia City Council is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. at Columbia City Hall.
Tomorrow will be the second public hearing on the budget. The third and final public hearing is scheduled for Sept. 21.
The budget needs to be approved by Oct. 1.
