COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia firefighters responded to a north Columbia McDonald's early Wednesday morning after workers reported seeing smoke in the lobby.

Columbia Fire Department spokesman Brad Fraizer said employees reported smelling burning rubber and seeing smoke around 3 a.m. He said the workers had evacuated the restaurant when crews arrived.

Firefighters didn't report seeing any flames on the outside or the inside of the building.

An ABC 17 News crew at the scene said nearly a dozen fire department vehicles and multiple ambulances responded to the McDonald's. It's unclear if any people were hurt in the incident.

Crews worked on the roof of the restaurant. Fraizer said firefighters inspected equipment on top of the building. The spokesman said it's unknown what caused the smoke and burning smell.
