Crews still working to clean Cole County diesel fuel leak

COLE COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Crews continue to clean a diesel fuel leak Tuesday morning in a creek near the Lincoln University Alan T. Busby Farm.

Cole County Public Works told ABC 17 News there is no danger to the public. They are also not sure exactly how long it will take to fully clean.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources was alerted by Lincoln University staff about a diesel fuel odor and “pink and rainbow sheen,” according to a Monday press release from Cole County Public Works.

It was determined that the sheen came from a fuel tank located across Highway 54 on the Cole County Public Works property, the release stated. The sheen was a red dyed off-road diesel fuel.

Cole County Public Works issued another press release Tuesday afternoon stating it has identified the leak's location and is working to dig wells at the leak site to collect the contamination directly from its source.

An investigation into the cause of the leak is ongoing, but initial findings show the leak occurred between the tank and pumps, the release states.
