Authorities search for driver accused of hitting Fulton officer with vehicle
CALLAWAY COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ)
Authorities were searching for a driver accused of hitting a Fulton police officer with a vehicle Monday.
According to a Facebook post by the Callaway County Sheriff’s Office, a police officer started chasing the vehicle near the Highway 54 and State Road F interchange in Fulton after 5:15 p.m.
Authorities say the vehicle stopped on County Road 230 near HH. When two officers tried to detain the people in the car, the driver allegedly hit one of the officers with the vehicle.
The Sheriff’s Office said that two officers fired their guns at the vehicle, which then drove away from the scene. The Facebook post did not say if anyone was believed to have been struck by the gunfire.
The vehicle was later found abandoned on State Road KK. Investigators say the vehicle was reported stolen in Kansas.
Authorities are looking for a man and woman. The Callaway County Sheriff's Office said it has tentatively identified the woman.
The Sheriff's Office is asking people who live in the area to lock their doors and vehicles and to report any suspicious activity.
The officer who was struck by the vehicle was taken to the hospital by ambulance. According to a news release, the officer is stable and in good condition. Authorities did not release the officer’s name.
ABC 17 News spoke with Fulton Police Chief Steve Myers over the phone Monday night. Myers said he did not know the reason officers were initially trying to pull over the vehicle. Myers said the officers involved in the situation would be placed on leave.
