What’s next for the Boone County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office?

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

After the sudden death of long-time Boone County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Knight, there is no timeline readily available for when the governor's office might appoint a replacement.

The governor has until the end of the year to appoint a prosecuting attorney. Gov. Mike Parson's office said Monday morning they were just learning of and processing the news, so a timeline is not currently available for when a replacement will be appointed.

Knight announced back in February he was not planning on running for reelection. Only one person, former Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Roger Johnson, has filed to run for the position in the upcoming November election.

Saturday around 9:35 a.m., Columbia police were dispatched to Knight's home where they found him dead. Columbia Police Chief Geoff Jones said foul play isn't suspected.

The Boone/Callaway Medical Examiner's Office confirmed an autopsy is scheduled for Knight Tuesday to help investigators determine a cause and mannerism for his death.

The Columbia Police Department said no more information is available at this time as the investigation is ongoing.
