Sonic boom heard, felt in Boone County
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A military aircraft caused a sonic boom heard around Boone County on Friday, a fire official said.
Gale Blomenkamp, Boone County Fire Protection District assistant chief, said the fire district received confirmation Friday afternoon that the boom was made by a low-flying military aircraft over northern Boone County.
The boom was heard and felt at about 1 p.m.
Emergency dispatchers received several reports of the boom around the county, including Sturgeon and Hallsville, Blomenkamp said.
At least one report came from south Columbia.
Aircraft manufacturer Boeing said the boom was likely related to a "speed run" by a U.S. Air Force crew testing an F-15 fighter jet.
"The aircraft was operating within pre-defined parameters at an altitude of about 40,000 feet," Boeing spokesperson Kenn Aguilar said.
