A Columbia man was pronounced dead at the hospital on Saturday after he collapsed in his cell at the Boone County Jail, according to the Boone County Sheriff's Department.

Robert Erik Bishop, 52, had a medical emergency in his cell due to a medical condition, said Sgt. Brian Leer with BCSD.

Jail staff performed CPR until medics arrived and took Bishop to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Leer said.

Bishop was believed to be homeless and was in jail after he was arrested on suspicion of trespassing and stealing on Friday.

The BCSD was investigating the death, but the initial report indicated it was due to a medical condition.

Authorities did not suspect foul play in the incident.
