Governor says California’s budget deficit has grown to nearly $32 billion

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California’s budget deficit is now nearly $32 billion. Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday updated his plan to cover that deficit. He proposed no major tax increases or spending cuts on core programs. His plan would cut spending by about $10.6 billion. The rest would come from a combination of borrowing and delaying some spending while shifting other expenses to different sources. Newsom’s plan would balance the budget this year. But it would leave the state with a $5 billion deficit next year. That would grow to $14 billion by 2027.
