California looks to phase out gas-fueled vehicles

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California is poised to require all new cars, trucks and SUVs sold in the state to be powered by electricity or hydrogen by 2035. The California Air Resources Board is taking public testimony Thursday ahead of a vote on the policy. Approval is expected. If that happens it will set the most aggressive roadmap in the nation for phasing out gas-powered cars and likely reshape the U.S. automobile marketplace by speeding the transition to electric vehicles. The policy doesn’t ban the sale of used gas cars in 2035 or make people get rid of gas-powered vehicles they already own. And it would allow 20% of all vehicle sales to be plug-in hybrids, which can run on batteries and gas.
