Man freed from prison after murder conviction sues police
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A 53-year-old man who was released from prison after his murder conviction was set aside is suing the Kansas City police department. Keith Carnes alleges in a lawsuit filed Wednesday that Kansas City officers framed him for the murder of Larry White in 2003. Carnes was released from prison in April 2022 after the Missouri Supreme Court set aside his conviction because an eyewitness account was not given to Carnes’ defense team. The Jackson County Prosecutor’s office declined to retry Carnes, saying there was insufficient evidence to convict him. In his lawsuit, Carnes alleges that police issued several fraudulent reports and coerced witnesses to frame him for the murder.
