Joplin police: Death during standoff linked to earlier death
JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) — Joplin police say the death of a man during a standoff is linked to the fatal shooting of another man. Police spokesman William Davis said officers went to a Joplin home Thursday evening to arrest a suspect in the death of 54-year-old Donald Wimer, who had been discovered earlier in the day with a fatal gunshot wound. When the suspect refused to surrender, a SWAT team fired chemicals that police say are not incendiary into the home. Davis says a fire broke out in the attic and a gunshot was heard inside the house. When officers eventually entered the home, they found the suspect dead.
