Officers shot at fleeing car before crash; driver dies

KMIZ

O’FALLON, Mo. (AP) — Police in suburban St. Louis say a man has died after officers fired shots at his fleeing car, which then crashed. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the confrontation in O’Fallon began Sunday when someone called police to report a suspicion car with people sleeping inside. Police say an officer who approached the vehicle said he saw a handgun inside near the driver. Police say the driver put the vehicle in reverse, hitting the officers’ squad car, and both officers then fired shots at the driver as he fled. The fleeing man’s vehicle crashed a short time later, and police determined he had been shot. The man was taken to a hospital, where he died. His name has not been released.
