JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Jefferson City Police Department has named the woman who was killed during an officer-involved shooting on Friday.

JCPD wrote in a Monday release that Julie Knehans, 53, of Jefferson City, was killed in the shooting.

The release says the officers who are involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave and that the Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating. JCPD will also conduct an internal administrative review.

“At this moment, no additional information will be disclosed. We extend our thoughts and prayers to all those impacted by this incident,” the release says.

JCPD previously said in a Saturday news release that officers shot an armed suspect during a burglary in progress call at about 4 p.m. in the 200 block of Gordon Street.

"The subject was armed, and a shooting occurred," the Saturday release says. "The subject did not survive the incident."

The release did not say who fired the fatal shot or whether it was self-inflicted.

According to Sgt. Germann Bradley with MHSP's Division of Drug and Crime Control, investigations into officer involved shootings typically take several weeks. However, if it find that multiple police officers involved fired their weapons, the investigation could take months.

Germann said MSHP handles the investigations by gathering evidence, speaking with witnesses and having an autopsy performed to determine the cause of death.

A special prosecutor will then review the report, and determine if charges are necessary.

Germann said in 2025 so far, MHSP has investigated eight officer-involved shootings. Two of those have been in Troop F's jurisdiction, which covers most of Mid-Missouri. The other occurred in early February in Columbia.

In 2024, the department investigated 28 officer involved shootings, four of which occurred in Troop F.
