Democrats retain open Michigan seat as Kristen McDonald Rivet beats Trump immigration official

Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) — Kristen McDonald Rivet has kept Michigan’s 8th congressional district in Democratic hands. This comes after one of the most competitive House races in the country. The freshman state senator prevailed against Republican Paul Junge, a former immigration official in the Trump administration. McDonald Rivet will succeed longtime Democratic Rep. Dan Kildee, who decided against seeking another term. Republicans had hoped to flip the seat that includes Flint in their effort to retain control of the U.S. House. The race was one of four seats — two that were open — where the balance of the U.S. House of Representatives is at stake.
