Hawaii can ban guns on beaches, an appeals court says

Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) — A U.S. appeals court ruling says Hawaii can enforce a law banning firearms on its world-famous beaches, but not at other so-called sensitive places, including banks. The opinion also applies to a similar challenge to a California ban on carrying guns in certain public places. Three residents who sued to block a 2023 Hawaii gun control law argued they wanted to be able to carry guns for self-defense on beaches and other places. Residents carrying guns in public is still fairly new to Hawaii. A 2022 U.S. Supreme Court decision that says people have a right to carry guns for self-defense prompted Hawaii and California to pass laws limiting guns in sensitive places.
