An attempted jailbreak in Congo’s main prison in Kinshasa leaves 2 inmates dead

Associated Press

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — Authorities in Congo say two inmates were killed when detainees tried to break out of the main prison in capital Kinshasa. The government spokesman confirmed there was an “an attempted escape” on Monday. Local media reported security forces killed some of those who tried to flee. By Monday morning, the road leading to the prison had been cordoned off by security forces. Videos purporting to be from inside the Makala prison showed several bodies on the ground. Amnesty International says the Makala prison, which is Congo’s main penitentiary with a capacity for 1,500 people, holds over 12,000 inmates.
