Montana becomes 8th state with ballot measure seeking to protect abortion rights

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Montana has become the eighth state in which voters will decide this year whether they want to legally protect the right to an abortion. Montana’s Secretary of State’s Office on Tuesday certified that the November general election ballot will include the initiative on amending the state constitution. The measure seeks to enshrine a 1999 Montana Supreme Court ruling that said the right to privacy protects the right to a pre-viability abortion by a provider of the patient’s choice. Opponents of the initiative had fought to try keep it off the ballot.
