Weather safety tips to remember as storms move into Mid-Missouri

COLUMBUS, Mo. (KMIZ)

As the ABC 17 Stormtack Weather Team continues to track severe storms for Saturday, that is bringing hail and strong winds, there are a few safety tips you can use to prepare for the weather.

According to experts, in 2020, 6.2 million properties across the country experienced one or more hail events resulting in more than $14 billion dollars in claims.

According to State Farm Insurance, you want to prepare for any electrical outages. You can do so by having a generator handy to help provide temporary power if needed.

Also to protect your vehicle, insurance experts say to move your vehicle inside a garage or carport if available. If not, use a vehicle cover and secure it with straps.

You'll also want to take care of any yard and home maintenance if possible. Nationwide Insurance says to have a trusted local roofing company look for anything that might need repairs. In addition, you want to also anchor or store any yard decorations and furniture so they won't become dangerous during high winds.

If you haven't already, you can download the ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather App to stay alert and keep up with any of the weather changes throughout Saturday.
