Meredith Santulli holds candlelight vigil one year since incident that left her brother, Danny, disabled

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Dozens attended a candlelight vigil for former University of Missouri student Danny Santulli on Wednesday night to mark the one-year anniversary of the Phi Gamma Delta alleged hazing incident that left him disabled.

Santulli was left unable to walk, talk or see after suffering a traumatic brain injury that night.

The vigil was held by Danny's older sister, Meredith -- an MU student -- and their brother Nick. Both spoke at the event. Attendees lit candles and said respectful words for Danny and the family.

"It’s a very senseless, preventable act," Nick said. "This is no freak accident. It's not like a plane crash or anything. These are orchestrated events and this happens more than you think. We want to spread awareness."

"Any situation you're in -- like doesn't even have to be at a fraternity -- just call 9-1-1 when you see someone in distress."

University President Mun Choi attended the event, along with community activist and the Rev. James Gray.
