Faulty wires result in family losing entire home

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ.)

A Boone County family's mobile home was burnt down Saturday evening, and with it destroyed several irreplaceable items.

"I lost my mom's necklace that had ashes in it. My grandbaby's half-brother passed away in May, we lost his ashes," Tammy Crow said.

The house fire on Saturday occurred on Wyatt Lane and Leisure Drive resulting in a family losing everything they've worked for. The fire burnt down an entire home, and all vehicles surrounding the property. Boone County fire also confirmed two dogs died in the blaze.

Crow said faulty wires cost their family roughly $75,000 in damages.

"There was a wiring issue by the microwave that caused the fire," Crow said.

Several house fires have plagued the Mid-Missouri area the past few weeks. Over the weekend, a fire in Fulton caused about $80,000 in damages. On Sept. 30, a house fire in Jefferson City sent two people to the hospital.

Boone County Assistant Fire Chief Gale Blomenkamp said families should take precautions to try to prevent traumatic incidents.

"If your gonna run a fireplace, or wood stove, have a chimney sweep come out and clean your chimney," Blomenkamp said. "Clean your stove pipe and make sure everything's good to go before you start using them in this season."

It's also important to create a fire escape plan and know at least two ways out of every room, if possible. Blomenkamp also recommends having your furnace checked.

"Before people start using their furnaces they should have them checked by a VAC company just to make sure that they're clean, safe, and running efficiently," Blomenkamp said.
