Columbia’s superintendent to discuss reaching student success at board of education meeting

COLUMBIA. Mo. (KMIZ.)

The Columbia Board of Education will host a meeting Wednesday where Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood plans to address growth and achievement at the school district.

Some of the items to be addressed in the PowerPoint are student attendance, achievements and teacher retention.

Data from the presentation shows teacher retention sits at 87% for the 2022-2023 academic school year. This number is only down by 1% from the previous academic year and down 4% from the 2020 and 2021 school years.

Data from the 2021-2022 academic school year shows the student-attendance rate is 68%, the lowest since 2017.

"Sometimes we need to have internal incentives for scholars. Prizes, competitions. We want to make school an exciting place," said Superintendent Yearwood.

The district stated COVID-19 resulted in a drop in student attendance. Below are some ways the district hopes to keep students in the classroom.

Action Steps:

  • Reinstate attendance letters.
  • Increase home visits by home school communicators.
  • Give positive phone calls home before negative calls
  • Create attendance competitions at elementary schools.

"Make it in such a way that scholars become excited about the learning process and were looking for ways that we can do that by providing varied activities," said Yearwood.

Achievement is also highlighted in the PowerPoint. Yearwood addresses tactics he hopes to use to increase student success.

Actions Steps:

  • Continue additional advanced courses during middle school.
  • Launch Tutor-Me and expand after-school tutoring partnerships with the community.
  • MTTS (Multi-Tiered systems of Supports).
