Executive director of Salute to America explains how it’s keeping visitors safe from the heat
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
Salute to America in Jefferson City is coming to an end Monday night but not without celebrating a few more festivities before the end of the holiday.
And even as the sun, starts to set it's still important to practice staying safe out in warmer temperatures.
Nicole Slusser, executive director of Salute to America, says this year the event had a steady crowd all throughout the day despite dangerous temperatures.
"We're trying to make sure we let everyone know where water is to kind of stay in the shade not directly out in the hot sun and just trying to accommodate, trying to watch people make sure no one gets overheated and different things like that," said Slusser.
The event coordinators also have first responders on-site and have been checking the temperature periodically, and shutting down rides that are too hot to touch when temperatures got high.
"Well, we've been drinking a lot of water and eating a lot of icies, it's been really hot so we've been trying to stay cool", said Jefferson City resident, Blaine Kelly.
"We were eating a lot of cold stuff and we were going inside and... yeah", said Blaine's sister Addien Kelley.
