MEXICO, Mo. (KMIZ)

An Audrain County judge sentenced a man for a deadly shooting at a park in Mexico.

A judge gave 20-year-old Ja'Vone Hornbeak 20 years in prison. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, three counts of armed criminal action and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon in April 2022.

The shooting happened in August 2020 at Garfield Park. The prosecutor says two groups met at the park to fight. Hornbeak pulled out a gun and shot at three people; killing Tornez Burton and hurting two others.

Hornbeak allegedly told Mexico officers that he shot Palmer but that it was an accident. He also denied shooting Burton saying "someone else with a gun did that," documents said.
