  1. The bright lights on Broadway must really be working. Now the shootings are happening a few blocks away in the neighborhoods. From the police scanner.

11:17 am, Officers on Business Loop heard the shots. They radioed Dispatch: “Shots fired…we just heard multiple gunshots, south of our location, south of Dairy Queen on Business Loop.” Officers go east, west and south of Dairy Queen looking for the gun men. When officers hear multiple shots it generates an even bigger police response than multiple callers to 911.

Officers ask Dispatch if there are any calls. Dispatch: “Several, we may have suspect info. Stand by.”

11:20 pm Dispatch: “We have a call coming in from Pendleton Street (this is between Granny’s House and the Columbia Housing Authority neighborhood). We may have victim info. We are trying to get them (the caller) to cooperate.” Medics are staged. Once again, officers (unnecessarily) ask Dispatch to notify hospitals.

Dispatcher says: “A lot of people are pretty panicked.” There is a report of a victim. Officers go to the reporting party’s location but do not see anything. Officers tell Dispatch that the reporting party “Needs to come outside and talk with us.” Dispatch calls the reporting party back. Officers learn: “We do not have a person physically hit at this time.”

It may be a coincidence, but an Officer felt the need to remind the other officers at the scene that the address on Pendleton where the shooting happened: “is Sam Baldwin’s house if you are not already aware.” Knowledgeable Columbia residents will recall that Sam Baldwin IV was the target of the shooting that killed, “criminally uninvolved” 18-year old, Nadria Wright, the promising Columbia College student, on September 13, 2019. At the time, police said Baldwin had been involved in “multiple shootings and in drug dealing. For the drugs he had on him when he was riding around with Nadria, he got out of jail in January 2022.

K-9 track did not turn up anything.
