State of Missouri executes Carman Deck by lethal injection

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The State of Missouri executed a man convicted of a double murder in 1996.

Carman Deck was put to death by lethal injection on Tuesday night at the prison in Bonne Terre, Missouri.

The decision to execute Deck comes after Gov. Mike Parson and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to take action to stop his execution.

The execution makes Deck the fifth U.S. inmate executed this year, according to deathpenaltyinfo.org.

Deck, 56, has been convicted three times in this case. On Monday, Gov. Parson cited the three cases in a statement.

"Mr. Deck has received due process, and three separate juries of his peers have recommended sentences of death for the brutal murders," said Gov. Parson. The governor added the state will carry out the sentence according to the court's order.

Deck was found guilty of killing James and Zelma Long in an execution-style manner at the couple's De Soto, Missouri home. However, all three convictions had been thrown out for procedural errors until a federal appeals court restored the death penalty decision in 2020.
