Two arrests have been made in connection to a shooting/disturbance call in Downtown Columbia Sunday morning that sent one person to the hospital
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Columbia Police Department has made two arrests in connection with a shots fired incident that sent one person to the hospital on Ninth and Cherry Street Sunday morning.
Police said the shooting happened at 1:45 a.m. Sunday morning, after officers were originally called to the area for a disturbance.
Officers on scene learned that one man had sustained a gunshot wound and been transported to a local hospital in a personally owned vehicle. As of 11 a.m. Sunday, he was in stable condition.
Police have arrested Victor L. Arriaga, 20 of Jefferson City, for assault and unlawful use of a weapon and Israel N. Ortiz, 20,of Jefferson City, for peace disturbance by fighting in relation to a reported shots fired investigation with injury.
One witness, Anthony Sobolevsky, said he was just about six feet away from a group arguing before he saw one person pull out a gun and fire multiple shots.
Sobolevsky said he then took off running down the street to try to find safety, as his ears were still ringing.
The University of Missouri's alert system MU Alert also sent out a tweet, advising students there was a shooting in the area and to avoid Ninth and Cherry.
