COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Mizzou is hosting it's annual volunteer program Caring for Columbia, where student's will help over 40 different local organizations and homeowner sites on Saturday.

The Student lead program was created within the Office of Student Engagement. Matt Hemmersmeier, director of the event, said "Each spring, we put on a day of service to say "Thank You" to the Columbia community for all that they do for Mizzou students throughout the year."

According to its mission statement, the event was designed "to serve the community. To promote volunteerism. To give students a better perspective of the world around them."

Students are scheduled to meet at Traditions Plaza at 7:30 a.m. where they will receive breakfast and a free shirt.

Student and community leaders will speak to the volunteers before they are sent to the various service sites by bus.
