Columbia officials warn of lingering cold as overnight warming center set to open
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Boone County Fire Protection District is giving guidance on how to stay warm in a Facebook post, as Mid-Missouri continues to deal with frigid temperatures.
Officials recommend wearing multiple layers of clothing and making sure to cover ones face and hands, along with wearing water resistant boots, as Columbia continues to deal with a lot of slushy conditions.
Limiting time spent outdoors is also advised, with the fire department asking residents to get medical help immediately if showing symptoms of frostbite or hypothermia.
Symptoms of frostbite can include redness or pain on exposed skin as well as numbness.
Symptoms of hypothermia can include shivering, as well as confusion or memory loss.
Additionally, Columbia announced Friday that the overnight warming center at the Wabash Bus Station will open Sunday night due to the cold weather.
The warming center will be open from 7 p.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. on Monday.
The city also listed additional warming centers and emergency shelters available for those looking to warm up.

- Salvation Army Harbor House
- True North
- Turning Point
- Welcome Home
- St. Francis House
- Rainbow House
- Flourish (for youth)
Warming centers include:
- ARC (Activity and Recreation Center)
- Boone County Government Center
- Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services
- Columbia Public Library
- Salvation Army
- Salvation Army Harbor House
- St. Francis House
