Jefferson City residents attempt to plow through the aftermath of overnight snowfall

Jefferson City, Mo. (KMIZ)

Following another round of overnight snowfall, some Jefferson City residents had to work their way out of small mountains of snow to get to their destination.

Britt Smith, operations director for Jefferson City Public Works, said his main crew of 24 plow truck drivers has been working the roads since 4 a.m. to get them clear.

He said due to pavement temperature temperatures being so low, their road treatment is not giving the effect they would like, however, they will continue to do what they can to get roads clear.

"We're hopeful that we're going to get you to know get our main routes in passable condition in the next couple of hours and then we're also be working into those local streets as well," said Smith

The city public works main crew worked until 7 p.m. Wednesday to clear the streets from the first round of snow and a relief crew of 10 drivers was brought in to take the main crew's place. Smith said that he hopes to send most of his main crew home by 4 p.m. but that will depend on how well the chemicals melt the snow.

Around 2:00 p.m. Thursday, Jefferson City resident, Eric Hemeyer was shoveling one of his property's walkways on Lafayette street. He said he felt the streets were shaping up nice and that the snow was melting at a good pace. Hemeyer said that his advice to drivers is to take it slow and make room for plows.

Kaitlyn Hartman had to go to get essentials. She said she has to park on a small side street where it's not much room. Her vehicle got plowed in by the snow but said she understand the city trucks can't get everywhere.

"I don't know how much more they could really do, I guess they could maybe try and get into some of these corners but with this much snow it's probably hard," said Hartman.

According to a press release from Jefferson City Public Works, Friday, some crews will continue working on road clearing while others begin the work of hauling snow from some of the downtown areas.  The work area for Friday will be High Street, from Washington to Adams Street, and Madison Street, from High St. to Capital Ave.

Work will begin at 6:30 a.m. and continue until noon.

The hauling operation will require parking removal in the area and the streets will be closed.  Crews will work block by block.  Once the work is finished in a block, parking will be permitted and the street will be reopened.

During work time, the city has asked people to use the free parking at Madison Street parking garage. They said crews have cleared the sidewalks in the area to provide access for residents and businesses.
