Road crews warn drivers to take it easy as plow trucks work to clear Jefferson city streets

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Jefferson City Public Works road crews have been working since midnight Wednesday to get roads clear for drivers.

Britt Smith, director of operations for Jefferson City Public Works, said his crew has a long day ahead but they are dedicated to getting the 250 miles of road clear.

Smith said the main crew of 24 plow trucks will work from midnight until about 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. Wednesday evening. At that point, Jefferson City Public Works will bring in a relief crew of 10 drivers who will work through the evening and overnight.

Smith although all their roads are not clear yet, they have made progress.

"Right now, I think we're making good progress. We're still classifying our local streets as covered and our main streets and our priority routes, our main routes, we have those classified as partially covered. Some of them are looking really good but some of them quite isn't there yet," said Smith.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol officials have said it has been a busy day for its troopers.

Just after 8:00 p.m., Troop F tweeted out that there have been 298 calls for service, 185 stranded motorists, 64 non-injury crashes, two injury crashes and no fatal crashes.

Corporal Kyle Green suggests drivers keep a greater distance between them and other cars and slow down while they drive.

"We are expecting more snow later this evening and that will last through tomorrow morning. So, we're still asking people to stay home unless absolutely necessary. Give MoDot a chance to get the roads cleared up and hopefully get things back to normal or at least close to it for Friday, " said Green.
