Columbia closing park and trail bathrooms because of cold

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia's park and trail bathrooms will be closed temporarily starting Wednesday because of extreme cold moving into Mid-Missouri.

Columbia Parks and Recreation said in a news release that signs will be posted telling users of parks and trails about the closure. The city's parks and trails have several heated restrooms but the cold will be too extreme for them to do an adequate job, according to the release. Extreme cold can cause plumbing to freeze and break, creating leaks.

Parks staff will also add non-toxic antifreeze to toilets and sinks, the department said. Bathrooms will reopen once the weather warms.

The ABC 17 News Stormtrack weather team has issued a Weather Alert Day starting Wednesday night because of the extreme cold. Lows in the teens are expected overnight Wednesday and Thursday.
