Mizzou men’s basketball coach tests positive for COVID-19

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Mizzou men's basketball coach Cuonzo Martin has tested positive for COVID-19. He announced the news on social media Monday afternoon.

Coach Martin said in a Tweet, "Encouraging everyone to stay safe during this holiday season. I’ve tested positive for Covid. Feeling well and thankful for our athletic training staff following protocol and keeping our team healthy. Our program is excited and ready to start conference play."

Mizzou still plans to open up SEC play on the road against No. 18 Kentucky on Wednesday at 6 p.m. An MU spokesperson said assistant coach Cornell Mann will serve as the head coach in Martin's place.

The spokesperson added none of the MU players have tested positive for the virus, and the team is scheduled to travel to Lexington on Tuesday.

Coach Martin could return by the Tigers home opener on Jan. 5 against Mississippi State, according to the spokesperson.

MU is 6-6 to start the season. The Tigers are coming off an 88-63 loss to Illinois in the Braggin' Rights game this past Wednesday. Earlier on Monday, the Illini canceled their upcoming game with Florida A&M due to COVID-19 concerns within their program.

We will continue to update this story with more information throughout the day.
