Statewide coronavirus deaths pass 400 in August

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

As the coronavirus continues to take lives every day across the United States, Missouri had 100 more deaths in August 2021 compared to August 2020.

Statewide

According to data from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, from Aug. 1 to the 30, there were 566 COVID-19 deaths in the state, an increase of 122 compared to last year.

In July, there were 550 COVID-19 deaths from the first to the 30th.

DHSS does not provide information on how many deaths in August 2021 were unvaccinated vs. vaccinated.

When a person dies, the cause of death is determined by a certifier or coroner. Coroners are asked to use their best medical judgment. If COVID-19 contributes to a person's death, the Center for Disease Control counts that as a COVID-19 related death, and it is up to the coroner to make the final decision.

Boone County

In August, there were 21 COVID-19 deaths reported in Boone County. Of those 21 deaths, 13 of them happened in August.

Often when COVID-19 deaths are counted they can be delayed. The Columbia/Boone County Health Department updates the data daily on their information hub to get the most accurate information.

The 13 deaths in August were the largest number of deaths seen in Boone County since Jan. when 19 coronavirus deaths were reported.

The death count was high in December and Nov., with 24 deaths in Nov. and 42 deaths in December.

Since the beginning of the vaccine effort, there have been only two vaccinated COVID-19 deaths, and since the number is so small, it is not counted monthly.

The Columbia/Boone County Health Department posts updated COVID-19 information at the end of every week.
