Mexico Public Schools not requiring masks in buildings, some social distancing measures expected

MEXICO, Mo. (KMIZ)

Mexico Public Schools has released a comprehensive plan ahead of students returning to the classroom for the first day of school Aug 25.

The district says while recommending masks, face coverings aren't required while inside buildings. The only mask requirement is for those traveling to or from school on a bus.

Last year, Mexico introduced masks for part of the year in an effort to reduce quarantine times, following guidance from Missouri's Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Without a mask mandate, there will not be exceptions to student quarantines.

Physical distancing is also recommended but not required. However, the district says increased measures can be put in place if there is an influx of cases.

Vaccinations are also being encouraged by the district, with the plan saying Mexico Public Schools will continue to work alongside the Audrain County Health Department to bring awareness to and publish vaccination events available for students and teachers.

ACHD is holding student clinics to get vaccinated against COVID-19 Wednesday and Thursday. Anyone under the age of 18 will need a parent's or guardian's consent and must be accompanied by an adult.

You can schedule an appointment here or by calling (573) 581-1332.

This, comes as Missouri reports just 27.5% of residents in Audrain County completing vaccination.

The district also says it has the option to work with the health department to host testing events if cases go up.

Cleaning and sanitation are also a priority, with the return plan including nightly, targeted cleaning of high-touch surfaces and all classrooms.

School playground equipment will also be cleaned as needed, with hand sanitizer and masks being readily available to teachers and students throughout schools.
