The Columbia Parks and Rec department expecting at least $55,000 in trail repairs

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Rain this morning once again caused flooding problems for parks in Columbia as water has washed out the trails through Columbia's Parks and Rec System, resulting in $55-65 thousand in trail repairs.

The department did clean up most of the damage from the past storms but after last night some trails are no longer passable.

Mike Griggs, the Director of Parks and Rec said this is the worst storm damage he's seen on the trails and in the parks since 1994.

"Complete areas of the trail washed away, your seeing trees down across the trails, you still got standing water, debris from flood waters receding on the trails, and of course even our concrete trails have a thin layer of mud," Griggs said.

Spots that have the most damage are the MKT trail, Jay Dix Station to Katy trail, Grindstone Creek and Bear Creek trail.

At this time they do not know how much it will cost to replace all the trees that fell down over the past week and last night.

Griggs asked that people who use the trails remember conditions are unstable and to remain alert and use caution.

The department asked that people remain alert for maintenance vehicles along the trails as they will be continuing to restore the parks over the weekend.
