Ceremony honors victim of Boone County’s last documented lynching

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Community Remembrance Project of Boone County will hold a ceremony on the MKT Trail near Providence and Stewart roads to rededicate a plaque marking the site of the county's last documented lynching.

The event is set for 4 p.m.

James Scott, a Black man, was lynched 98 years ago by a white mob after he was accused of assaulting a young girl. Scott was hanged from what was then the Stewart Bridge over the MKT Railroad.

Ceremony participants will collect soil from the site to send to the Legacy Museum in Alabama.
