Warming centers in Columbia remain open as temperatures drop
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
As temperatures in Mid-Missouri continue to hover in the single digits, warming shelters in Columbia are keeping their doors open.
The Wabash Bus Station originally opened Feb. 5 due to cold temperatures and will now remain open through Monday morning from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. each day.
Other shelters in Columbia include:
- Room at the Inn
- Salvation Army Harbor House (men, women and families), 602 N. Ann St.
- St. Francis House (for men), 901 Range Line St.
- Lois Bryant House (women and families), 913 Range Line St.
- Rainbow House (for children/youth), 1611 Towne Drive.
- True North (for domestic violence), please call 573-875-1370
- Welcome Home (for veterans), 2120 Business Loop 70 E.
Columbia also has warming centers open during normal business hours. Those include:
- ARC (Activity and Recreation Center), 1701 W. Ash St.
- Boone County Government Center, 801 E. Walnut St.
- Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services, 1005 W. Worley St.
As temperatures are expected to only drop headed into the weekend, it's important to stay safe outside in the cold weather.
The Boone County Fire Protection District posted recommendations on its Facebook page.
Officials urge residents to wear multiple layers and limit time outdoors to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also has the signs and symptoms of frostbite and hypothermia on its website.
Those symptoms include:
- Shivering
- Confusion
- Exhaustion
- Memory Loss
- Slurred Speech
- Numbness
The website also has recommendations for being outdoors in extremely cold temperatures.
Those recommendations include working slowly while doing outside chores and to bring a buddy if you're participating in outdoor recreation.
