Mizzou defensive coordinator leaves for Illinois

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Ryan Walters is reportedly leaving Mizzou to join the Illinois football coaching staff, according to Football Scoop and other outlets. He will be the new defensive coordinator under the Fighting Illini's first year head coach Bret Bielema.

We are still working to independently confirm these reports.

Walters just finished his sixth season with the Tigers. He initially came to MU has the safeties coach in 2015. Former head coach Barry Odom promoted him to defensive coordinator/safeties coach in 2016.

MU's defense ranked No. 66 in the nation this past season. The Tigers gave up 408 yards per game in their all SEC schedule.
