Hy-Vee says customers who purchased the affected products should throw them away or return them to the store.

Hy-Vee first became aware of the potential for contamination after Fresh Express, the company that makes the product, announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control Prevention (CDC) expanded its investigation of an outbreak of Cyclospora in the upper midwest.

The expanded recall comes after Hy-Vee initially recalled 12 oz. Hy-Vee Bagged Garden Salad last week.

Consuming Cyclospora could cause cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness. According to the news release, people typically present symptoms several days after ingesting it. Those symptoms can include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, cramping, bloating, increased gas, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, and low-grade fever.

More information about the illness can be found on the CDC's website.
