COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia Public Schools canceled classes Wednesday ahead of expected snow.

The ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Team issued a Weather Alert Day for the expected winter weather.

District spokeswoman Michele Baumstark cited the impending weather and timing of the snow in an email sent after 5 p.m.

"The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority," Baumstark said.

The Jefferson City School District announced it was canceling Wednesday classes around 8:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Ryan Burns, a district spokesperson, said Wednesday marks the fourth full snow day for JC Schools. The prior three full snow days will be made up by staff and students at the end of the school year. Burns said Wednesday's snow day will not result in any additional make-up days for students.

Columbia College decided to close three of its campuses Wednesday. Lincoln University also announced it's campus would be closed due to hazardous travel conditions.

Other districts, including Centralia Public Schools and the New Franklin School District, canceled classes for Wednesday.
