COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia experienced a high number of shooting deaths in 2019.

ABC 17 News looked back at news releases from the city. According to the releases, 12 people were killed in shootings in Columbia from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 in 2019.

An analysis of the press releases showed there were a total of 31 reports of shootings in 2019 altogether. Many of these shootings left people with non-life-threatening injuries, or there were no injuries reported at all.

September 2019 was particularly active, with seven shootings from September 2 to September 29.

The violence was widespread throughout the city, but several areas experienced more than one shooting.

There were three shootings in the area of Rice Road where three people died, including a minor. There were also two separate shootings on Raleigh Drive, but no injuries were reported at either.

The number of shooting deaths was higher in 2019 than in the previous two years.

In 2017, there were nine shooting deaths in Columbia, and in 2018 there were eight.
