COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Columbia Public Schools approved the name for a new middle school at its Monday night meeting.
The name for the new school will be John Warner Middle School, named in honor of a former Columbia Police Department officer who died in August.
Last night, the November board meeting was a night to thank and honor those who serve to keep our communities safe through education and their duty to protect. We thanked our veterans for the service and named the new MS after John Warner.#thankyouforyourservice #cpsbest— Blake Willoughby (@BlakeWilloughby) November 12, 2019
Warner was a CPD officer for 27 years and served as a school resource officer from 2009 until he retired in 2014, according to his obituary at Dignity Memorial.
Warner went on to work for the Center for Education Safety/Missouri School Board Association until his death, his obituary said.
John Warner Middle School is scheduled to open in August 2020. It's located on Sinclair Road near Southampton Drive.
