Columbia police end dig at landfill that turned up human remains

Columbia police say they’ve wrapped up their search of the city landfill for clues in the death of a woman missing since 2006.

Police and Solid Waste Utility employees began digging Sept. 18 in an attempt to find items from the time period when Megan Shultz was reported missing in August 2006. Police say Shultz’s husband, Keith Comfort, confessed to police in Wisconsin last month that he killed Shultz after she told him she was part of a drug deal. Comfort allegedly told police that he put her body in a garbage bag and dumped it in a trash bin.

Comfort is charged with second-degree murder in Boone County.

Columbia police said last week that the landfill search uncovered human remains that might be those of Megan Shultz, but DNA testing was necessary to confirm the body’s identity. That testing is ongoing, the Columbia Police Department said Thursday in a news release.

“No further evidence has been located in the areas determined to have been used at the time of her disappearance,” police said in the release. “All evidence that has been collected will undergo extensive analysis, including DNA testing.”

CPD asks anyone with information about the case to call the department or CrimeStoppers at 875-8477.
