Power restored to buildings on MU campus

UPDATE: Power was restored to Hudson, Rollins and Gillett residence halls around 9 p.m. Tuesday after an outage affected 20 buildings on campus.

According to a tweet from MU Residential Life, crews were working on the transformer around 8 p.m., and, at the time, repairs were expected to take about three hours.

Power was restored to a majority of the campus around 6 p.m.

ORIGINAL: Power was out Tuesday evening to about 20 buildings on the University of Missouri campus.

University of Missouri spokesman Christian Basi said preliminary information indicated the outage was mechanical in nature but more investigation was needed to determine the exact cause.

University of Missouri Police Department spokeswoman Sara Diedrich said police officers and firefighters responded to calls of people trapped in elevators. No injuries had been reported a little before 5:30 p.m., she said.

Basi said anyone who had been entrapped when the power went out had been rescued. Power had starting coming back on at affected buildings by about 5:45 p.m. and Basi said MU officials expected all power to be restored within about 10 minutes.

MU spokeswoman Liz McCune said the line at the Conley Avenue substation tripped, causing the outage.

The Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center on campus tweeted that it would be closed Tuesday evening because of a power outage but will reopen at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

PSA: Due to the campus power outage, the GOBCC will be closed for the evening.

Any events, programs, or reservations that have been scheduled for the evening have been canceled or postponed to a later time.

The GOBCC will reopen tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.
