Missouri State Penitentiary inspection reveals extent of tornado damage

A structural inspection of the Missouri State Penitentiary reveals the extent of the damage caused by the May 22 tornado.

The roofing on Housing Unit 4 by the tornado and the building is considered dangerous because of falling hazards, according to a structural inspection report conducted by Allstate Consultants.

The Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau said modified tours at MSP will resume on Oct. 1 and will take visitors through all previously toured buildings except Housing Unit 4.

The Office of Administration is working with the Convention and Visitors Bureau to determine the next steps for the building. An estimated cost for permanent building repair and replacement is $9,397,371, and the estimate for temporary repairs is $3,455.95, according to the Office of Administration.

The inspection found varying degrees of tornado damage in Housing Units 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Inspectors observed damage to building envelopes from wind and debris impact.

“Damaged areas at the roof structures, masonry walls and building envelopes should be replaced or repaired,” the report said.

The inspection said deferred maintenance has caused the penitentiary to have numerous areas of damage or areas of concern.

The inspection concluded “the buildings have had questionable maintenance in the past which can cause moisture related damage.”
