WEATHER ALERT DAY: Dangerous Heat sets in Monday
MONDAY MORNING UPDATE:
We’re tracking storms this morning moving through northern portions of the viewing area. Some locations have picked up between 2-4″ of rain easily with just this batch, leading to Flash Flooding in some spots.
Despite morning showers and thunderstorms, heat is still expected to build back in later this afternoon. However, there is another round of storms that could roll through, with some uncertainty on the timing. With all the available heat and humidity, there is a severe threat, primarily for gusty winds and pretty frequent lightning. But again, there are plenty of questions as to if/when storms will form later today as a cold front moves through.
ALERTS:
SYNOPSIS:
An upper level ridge of high pressure will begin to settle over Mid-Missouri this weekend bringing with it hot weather over the next 72 hours. While a Weather Alert Day has NOT been issued for Saturday, it will still be hot across Mid-Missouri, with heat indices between 93-97. Despite having storms in the forecast Sunday, many places will feel like the triple digits. On Monday, the heat index will soar up to 105 degrees in much of the area.
WHAT TO KNOW:
Practice heat safety over the weekend but be especially mindful Sunday and Monday afternoon.
THE CULPRIT: YOU GUESSED IT… THE HUMIDITY/DEW POINT
With dew point values increasing over the next several days, it will be harder and harder for sweat to evaporate from our skin outdoors which will cause our bodies cool less efficiently, in turn causing us to overheat. Wear sunscreen, drink plenty of water, exercise and take your dogs on walks during the morning or the evening and make sure to take plenty of breaks in the shade during the peak afternoon heating.
We’ll be tracking any updates on air and online over the next several days.
