Columbia leaders set to discuss Climate Action Plan

The Downtown Columbia Leadership Council is set to meet Wednesday afternoon to discuss how to implement the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan in the downtown area.

City Council unanimously approved the plan in June.

The goal of the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan is to reduce emissions by 50 percent in the city’s municipal operations by 2035, and by 100 percent by 2050.

The plan is in its early stages and it’s too early to tell if the plan will increase taxes or utility rates.

Columbia’s leaders have said the first step of the plan is to form a community climate commission.

Leaders have discussed implementing renewable energies, replacing the current source of electricity and creating more energy-efficient homes and houses.

The meeting is set to take place Wednesday at Columbia City Hall at 4 p.m in Conference Room 1B.
