U.S. Army Corps of Engineers discusses levee repairs
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers estimates up to two years is needed to repair levees to their condition before flooding began in 2019.
The Corps expects to finish damage assessments by the end of September. A total of 81 levee districts have requested for levee rehabilitation since March.
The Capitol View Drainage District’s levee failed March 26 and is waiting for a damage assessment. The levee, which has four holes in it, used to protect northern Jefferson City.
“The airport, ABB, the sandplant, MFA and the list goes on and on,” said Capitol View Drainage District board member Jay Fischer. “We really need a quick response from the Corps of Engineers.”
Fischer said floodwaters cover about 2,000 acres of his farmland.
On Wednesday, floodwaters returned to the Jefferson City Memorial Airport after receding last week.
“People don’t realize how many people are affected by it,” Fischer said. “Not just the farmland, not just that we won’t raise a crop, but there’s literally hundreds of jobs, maybe thousands in the north Jeff City area.”
