Jefferson City prepares to re-enter major flood stage

The latest projections from the National Weather Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration show the Missouri River will crest at 30 feet in Jefferson City between Wednesday and Thursday.

That reading was published Monday at 10:45 a.m. and Jefferson City Public Works Director Britt Smith called it “positive news.”

Smith said the historic flooding this spring has left the levees in Jefferson City and Cole County in a compromised state, meaning “flood waters may be the new normal this summer.”

Cleanup and repair work at Jefferson City Memorial Airport continued Monday, but Smith said the incoming flood stage may undo much of the progress that has been made.

Smith said he’s hoping for a reduction in the subsequent river level projections, and for some sustained dry weather so that the levees can be inspected and ultimately repaired.
